Thomas Pender Hocker was born in 1816 in Ohio Co, Ky and raised in Ohio Co, Ky. Thomas Pender Hocker named after his mother Hester Pender Hocker’s father. Thomas Pender Hocker married Lucretia Shields1 the 26th of November 1844 in Ohio Co, Ky. Lucretia was born in 1816 in Ky and the daughter of John Shields (born 12 October 1791 Barren Co, Ky, died 11 October 1863 Daviess Co, In) and Polly C Carter (born 1795 NC, died 18 April 1865 In) who married the 29th of February 1816 in Barren Co, Ky. Thomas Pender Hocker was a farmer as shown in the 1860 Ohio Co, Ky census. There was a major tragedy that occurred sometime in the mid 1860’s that goes like this. Thomas Pender Hocker and his wife Lucretia’s son Henry Hocker found his sister Sarah Ann Hocker and Clay Shields fooling around and Henry Hocker said he would tell his parents. Clay Shields told him not to because he would kill him, but Henry Hocker told and Clay Shields then shot Henry Hocker to death. Justice was swift in those days, and Clay Shields was found guilty and hung a couple of weeks later. We believe that Sarah Ann Hocker had a daughter Naomi Hocker from this relationship. This tragedy probably caused Thomas Pender Hocker’s wife Lucretia, and the mother of Henry Hocker to died before 1870. We find that Lucretia does not appear on the 1870 census. Sarah Ann Hocker and Naomi Hocker are found on the 1870 Ohio Co, Ky census, but shortly afterward Naomi may have died and Sarah Ann fell apart and was committed to the Western Kentucky Home for the Insane in Christian Co, Ky. Was Naomi the daughter of Sarah Ann Hocker which came about from the affair with Clay Shields? We think so, since Lucretia would have been 50 years old when Naomi was born. Sarah Ann Hocker was a patient at the Western Kentucky Asylum for the insane as shown in the 1900 Ky sndx also. The 1880 Ohio Co, Ky census shows Thomas Pender Hocker living alone and next to the farm of his daughter Philina and her husband and their children. This tragedy almost wiped out the family. Lucretia and Thomas Pender had five children, all born in Ohio Co, Ky as follows: 1) Sarah Ann Hocker was born in February 1845 in Ohio Co, Ky and living at home with her parents as shown in the 1860 Ohio Co, Ky census. Sarah Ann Hocker is shown living with her widower father according to the 1870 Ohio Co, Ky census. The 1900 Ky sndx shows Sarah Ann Hocker was a patient at the Western Kentucky Asylum for the Insane in Christian Co, Ky. Apparently Sarah Ann Hocker had problems dealing with the tragedy that occured with her brother Henry Hocker being shot to death by her lover Clay Shields, who was then hung. This affair between Sarah Ann Hocker and Clay Shield probably produced a daughter, Naomi Hocker born in 1866 in Ohio Co, Ky. We believe Naomi died sometime shortly after 1879 and this total tragedy pushed Sarah Ann Hocker over the line. We find her in the 1880 Ky sndx a patient in the Western Kentucky Asylum for the Insane. All because Henry Hocker told his parents about Clay Shields and Sarah Ann Hocker fooling around. 2) Philina E Hocker (see Chapter 8c2d2d2) was born in November 1847 in Ohio Co, Ky and was living at home with her widower father according to the 1870 Ohio Co, Ky census. Philina E Hocker married Charles D Douglas in a double ring ceremony with her sister Isabella Hocker and Pleasant Calvin Watt the 23rd of November 1876 in Ohio Co, Ky. Charles was born in March 1851 the son of George Fountain Douglas (born 1814 Va, a carpenter) and Nancy A Tiford (born 1827 Ky) who married the 18th of July 1843 in Ohio Co, Ky. Charles Douglas was a farmer and owned his farm which was located on the “Old Hartford Road” in Ohio Co, Ky, right next to Thomas Pender Hocker’s residence as shown in the 1880 Ohio Co, Ky census. Philina and Charles Douglas had six children, all born in Ohio Co, Ky. For information about their children see Chapter 8c2d2d2. According to the 1920 Ohio Co, Ky census we find Charles Douglas and Philina with their daughter Gertrude, along with William Miller and wife Gertrude living with them. The 1930 Ohio Co, Ky census shows Charles Douglas and Philina with their daughter Gertrude living with them. Charles D Douglas died the 24th of December 1931 in Ohio Co, Ky and Philina E [Hocker] Douglas died in 1932 in Ohio Co, Ky. (Source Code – XOCM.) 3) Henry A Hocker was born in 1850 in Ohio Co, Ky and raised in Ohio Co, Ky. Henry Hocker was shot to death about 1865 by Clay Shields after Henry Hocker told about his sister Sarah Ann Hocker and Clay Shields fooling around. Clay Shields was found guilty and hanged a few weeks later. 4) Isabella C Hocker (see Chapter 8c2d2d4) was born the 25th of February 1853 in Ohio Co, Ky and living at home with her widower father according to the 1870 Ohio Co, Ky census. Isabella C Hocker married Pleasant Calvin Watt in a double ring ceremony with her sister Philina Hocker and Charles Douglas the 23rd of November 1876 in Ohio Co, Ky. Pleasant Calvin was born in March 1851 in Warren Co, Ky the son of Gentry F Watt (born 1829 Ky, a farmer) and Cornelia E Lewis (died before 1860 Ky) who married the 27th of December 1847 in Warren Co, Ky. Isabella and Pleasant Calvin Watt had two children, both born in Ohio Co, Ky. For information about their children see Chapter 8c2d2d4. Pleasant Calvin Watt was a farmer and his farm was located on Cromwell and Rosine roads in the town of Cromwell according to the 1910 Ohio Co, Ky census. (Source Code – XOCM.) 5) Naomi Hocker was born in 1866 in Ohio Co, Ky, but we cannot locate her after 1870, she must have died in infancy. It is very likely that Naomi was the daughter of Sarah Ann Hocker and Clay Shields. 7c2d2f) Napoleon Bonaparte Hocker (see Chapter 6c2d2f). (Source Code – Cd 229.) Napoleon Bonaparte Hocker was born the 27th of June 1820 in Ohio Co, Ky and raised in Ohio Co, Ky. Napoleon Bonaparte Hocker married his first cousin (see paragraph 7c2d4d1) Sarah Mary “Sally” Hocker the 21st of December 1847 in Ohio Co, Ky. The bondsman was Clarissa’s father Henry Cooper. The 1860 and 1880 Ohio Co, Ky census has Napoleon Bonaparta Hocker a farmer. The 1900 Ohio Co, Ky census shows they had eleven children and seven were still alive. Sometime right after 1900 Napoleon Bonaparte Hocker and Sally moved to Sangamon Co, Il. Sarah Mary “Sally” [Hocker] Hocker died the 16th of January 1905 and Napoleon Bonaparte Hocker died the 28th of September 1909 in Sangamon Co, Il and both are buried there. Sally and Napoleon Bonaparte Hocker had eleven children, eight lived past their infancy, all born in Ohio Co, Ky as follows: 1) Louisa Cooper Hocker was born in 1849 in Ohio Co, Ky and according to the 1860 Ohio Co, Ky census was attending school. The 1870 census shows that Louisa Cooper Hocker was a school teacher and living with her parents. Louisa Cooper Hocker married Joseph H Miller the 13th of July 1872 in Ohio Co, Ky. Joseph was born in 1837 and the son of Joseph Miller (born 1797 Md, a farmer) and Helen Austin (died before 1850 Ky) who married the 10th of November 1818 in Ohio Co, Ky by Methodist minister Rev Loderick Davis. The bondsman was Helen’s father John Austin. Louisa and Joseph Miller had a daughter, Hattie Miller born in 1874 in Ohio Co, Ky. Louis Cooper [Hocker] Miller died about 1877 in Ohio Co, Ky. Her daughter Hattie Miller was living with her father and step-mother in Beaver Dam and attending school as shown in the 1880 Ohio Co, Ky census. (Source Code – XOCM.) 2) Elvis Warren Hocker (see Chapter 8c2d2f2) was born the 20th of December 1850 in Ohio Co, Ky and was attending school according to the 1860 Ohio Co, Ky census. The 1910 Sangamon Co, Il census shows Nicholas Hocker a was living without his wife Rosa Annie, but he had his eight children living with him and he was working as a laborer in a cement plant. Apparently Nicholas Hocker and Rosa Annie divorced. We find that Rosa Annie married to William Bounds (born 1873 Il) about 1916, and in 1930 Sangamon Co, Il census they had her son Earl Hocker living with them. The 1930 Tulsa Co, Ok census shows that Nicholas Hocker jr was living with his daughter Nina and her family. George’s paternal grandparents are John A Ingram (born 20 February 1818 Muhlenberg Co, Ky, died 11 March 1835 Muhlenberg Co, Ky) and Mary Jane Mann (born about 1822 Va, a seamstress) who married in 1836 in Muhlenberg Co, Ky. Nancy Cooper and George Ingram had three children, all born in Ohio Co, Ky. For information about their children see Chapter 8c2d2f8. As shown in the 1900 Ohio Co, Ky census George Ingram was a farmer and owned his farm in Cromwell, Ky free of any mortage. The 1930 Sangamon Co, Il census shows that George Ingram was working as a laborer in a mattress company. (Source Code – XOCM.) 9) Francis H “Fannie” Hocker was born in November 1867 in Ohio Co, Ky and was attending school according to the 1880 Ohio Co, Ky census. Francis Hocker was living with her parents as shown in the 1900 Ohio Co, Ky census. Francis H “Fannie” Hocker married J E Chinn the 1st of October 1902 in Ohio Co, Ky. At this time we do not know anymore about this couple. (Source Code – XOCM.) 7c2d2h) Senatus Jackson Hocker (see Chapter 6c2d2h). (Source Code – Cd 002.) Senatus Jackson Hocker was born in 1828 in Ohio Co, Ky and raised in Ohio Co, Ky. Senatus Jackson Hocker was caught up in the “Gold Rush” in 1849 and went West to strike it rich. When Senatus Jackson returned to Kentucky he married Eliza Dickerson the 30th of September 1855 in Muhlenberg Co, Ky. Eliza was born in 1836 in Sumner Co, Tn the daughter of Griffith Dickerson (born 1814 Tn, a farmer) and Mary Badgett (born 1816 Tn) who married the 13th of October 1832 in Sumner Co, Tn. The bondsman was Richardson Dickerson. Eliza’s maternal grandparents are James Badgett and Margaret Harrison who married the 20th of March 1803 in Granville Co, NC. Eliza’s paternal grandparents are Wylie Dickerson (born 1785 Va, a farmer) and Nancy Walls (died before 1839 Tn) the 7th of January 1806 in Sumner Co, Tn. Eliza’s paternal great grandparents are John Dickerson (a revolutionary war veteran and had gained bounty land in Tennessee for his services) and Mary, maiden name unknown, who were originally from Va and arrived in Sumner Co, Tn about 1791, several years after his brothers had migrated to that part of Tennessee. John Dickerson’s brother James Dickerson was killed by indians about 1786 between White’s Station and Colonel Sanders’s Fort. Eliza was kinfolk to a Dickerson who was a frontiersman and expert shot. This Dickerson was in a duel with a hotheaded lawyer by the name of Andrew Jackson just above the Tennessee border in Kentucky. Andrew Jackson caught the first shot in the chest, but he did not fall, but aimed and shot this Dickerson. Dickerson eventually died from the shot, but Andrew Jackson carried his bullet next to his heart for the rest of his life because to removed it was to dangerous. It is ironic that Nicholas Hocker named his son after Andrew Jackson, since Nicholas Hocker fought with General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 at the Battle of New Orleans. So when Nicholas’s son was born Andrew Jackson was a Senator from Tennessee and running for president, so he named his new born son Senatus Jackson Hocker. Then Senatus Jackson Hocker married Eliza Dickerson, kinfolk of the man who shot Andrew Jackson. Small world back then, that is for sure! Senatus Jackson Hocker was a blacksmith, and apparently got his blacksmith tools from the Dickerson family. It must also be noted that Senatus Jackson Hocker and Eliza had their children born spaced out as if Jackson was not around during the civil war. Then after the war was over, his first child, a son was born in 1866 and was named after the great southern General Robert E Lee. Eliza and Senatus Jackson Hocker had four children, all born in Muhlenberg Co, Ky as follows: 1) Felix Nicholas Hocker was born in 1858 in Muhlenberg Co, Ky and raised in Muhlenberg Co and Ohio Co, Ky. According to the 1890 Ky index Felix Nicholas Hocker was living with his brother Robert E Lee Hocker in McHenry, Ohio Co, Ky and working as a coal miner. Felix Nicholas Hocker was a news agent in April 1893 and he went to the 1900 Chicago World’s Fair and worked in the Mineral Department of the World’s Fair. Felix Nicholas Hocker married Ann Naylor the 22nd of August 1900 in Coalgate, Ok. Ann was born in 1851 in England. Apparently Ann died since we find in the 1910 Logan Co, Ky census Felix Nicholas Hocker was living at the residence of Alonzo L Johns and working as a capitalist. Source Code – XCNM.) 2) Catharine Frances “Kate” Hocker (see Chapter 8c2d2h2) was born in July of 1859 in Muhlenberg Co, Ky and raised in Muhlenberg Co and Ohio Co, Ky. “Kate” as she was called was well into her teens when her mother died. Kate Hocker took care of the household duties and watched over her younger siblings. Kate Hocker had attended school and could read and write. Catharine Frances “Kate” Hocker married widower John W Calloway the 28th of May 1884 in Ohio Co, Ky. John was born in July 1859 in Ky the son of James Henry Calloway (born 1834 Ky, RR crew in 1870 and a coal miner in 1880) and Catharine A “Kitty” Redmon (born 1836 Ky) who married the 29th of February 1856 in Spencer Co, Ky. Apparently this was John’s second marriage, since he was married to Susan and she died. John’s mother’s parents are John B Redmon and Susan Reasor who married the 18th of August 1835 in Spencer Co, Ky. John’s great grandfather was Chesley Calloway, a revolutionary war veteran who died in 1846. Kate and John Calloway had six children, all born in Ohio Co, Ky. For information about their children, see Chapter 8c2d2h2. According to the 1910 Ohio Co, Ky census Kate was a widow and Kate’s daughter Evie Calloway went to work and live for the Silas Tichenor family. Roscoe Calloway and Hattie Calloway were living at home and working on the farm as shown in the 1910 census and the two youngest sons, Robert Harvey Calloway and William Calloway were at home also. The 1920 Ohio Co, Ky census shows Hattie Calloway and Robert Harvey Calloway living at home with their widow mother Kate. (Source Code – XOCM.) 3) Robert Lee Hocker (see Chapter 8c2d2h3) was born in 1867 in Muhlenberg Co, Ky and started to working in the coal mines when only thirteen. Robert Lee Hocker did go to school and could read and write. Robert Lee Hocker was about six foot and very lean when I saw him at grandmom’s funeral. Robert Lee Hocker married Mrs Elizabeth Naylor the 29th of January 1899 in Choctaw Indian Nation (now Coalgate, Ok). Elizabeth was born the 24th of August 1870 in England the daughter of James Naylor (born March 1849 Lancashire Co, England) and Elizabeth Brown (born June 1849 a twin to her brother William, in Lancashire Co, England) who were married in December 1868 in Wigan, Lancashire Co, England. Elizabeth and her first husband George Wareing (they married in June 1890 in Wigan, Lancashire Co, England) arrived in this country in 1891. They had a son we know of, Harold Louis Wareing. Elizabeth’s first husband George Wareing may have died, and then she married Robert Lee Hocker. Elizabeth re-used her maiden name on the marriage certificate. It is very interesting that she did this, and we still have to find out why? Was she divorced or a widow? We do not know as of this writing. Elizabeth was a very beautiful women, with long blonde hair and light blue eyes, that sparkled. She was intelligent, educated, and was taught the social graces. My aunt Zelphe, Elizabeth’s youngest daughter spent several weeks with my family, and during that time told many stories about her mother (my grandmother). About 1912, Elizabeth was returning from England were she had visited her family, knowningly for the last time. On the return home, Zelphe recalls her mother stepping out of the coach into six inch deep Arkansas mud with her long dress and petticoats on, as if dressed for a night out in London town. Soon after Elizabeth and Robert Lee Hocker married they migrated near Fort Smith, Ark and settled in Hacket, Sebastian Co, Ark. My father, Harold Louis Wareing was born the 12th of September 1897 in Pawnee Indian Nation (near present day Coalgate, Ok). Elizabeth’s first husband George Wareing apparently died and then she married Robert Lee Hocker and he adopted Harold Louis Wareing sometime after the 1900 census was taken. After Robert Lee Hocker and Elizabeth married they returned to Hacket, Sebastian Co, Arkansas. Robert Lee Hocker worked in the coal mines, and the whole family stayed in Hacket, Sebastian Co, Arkansas until sometime before WW I. About 1917 the family migrated from Arkansas thru Kentucky, were they visit Robert Lee Hocker’s sisters Kate Calloway and Hester Morris who lived in Ohio Co, Ky. After that visit they moved to Stuebenville, Jefferson Co, Oh. Elizabeth and Robert Lee Hocker had five children, the eldest being adopted and born in Pawee Indian Nation (now know as Oklahoma), and the other four were born in Hackett, Sebastian Co, Ark. For information about their children, see Chapter 8c2d2h3. Elizabeth [Naylor] Wareing Hocker died the 4th of May 1950 in Dayton, Summit Co, Oh and Robert Lee Hocker died in 1952 in Stuebenville, Jefferson Co, Oh. Both are buried in the Union Cemetery, Steubenville, Jefferson Co, Oh. Elijah’s mother died and we find Elijah living with his widow father in 1870 Ohio Co, Ky census. Then his father married Priscilla, maiden name unknown (born September 1849 Ky). In 1880 Elijah Morris was living next door to his parents at the residence of Lewis and Matilda H Martin, his mother’s kinfolk. Hester and Elijah had a child which apparently died in infancy. According to the 1930 Ohio Co, Ky census Hester and her husband Elijah were living alone and Elijah was farming. Hester Dickerson [Hocker] Morris died the 12th of August 1934 in Ohio Co, Ky. 7c2d4a) Martin Hocker (see Chapter 6c2d4a). (Source Codes – HDT, Cd 229.)
